The Information Security Assistant is a broad role and ideal for an entry point into Information Management, Governance, Compliance and Knowledge. They will support the Data Protection Officer (DPO), Information Governance Services in the delivery of NWS's Data Protection and Information Governance including Freedom of Information management processes, strategies, programmes, projects, and activities in line with business targets and objectives, whilst ensuring alignment with the wider strategic priorities of the NWS business and NDA Group.


Information Security Assistants support the development and strengthening of relationships within the business by providing timely guidance, procedural advice and recommendations on information management, knowledge management and compliance activities throughout the system and personal information asset lifecycle, from concept, operations, archival and through to deletion. Ensuring that all regulatory and business requirements and objectives are met and answer low level queries at point of demand.


Work with the business to gather and retain knowledge, records asset locations and criticalities




Maintain various registers such as the Information Asset Register by engaging with the business, to ensure that NWS knows what data, systems and information it has and where it is located.

Support initial incident response for personal data incidents and factor lessons learnt from incidents into the information governance policies and processes.

Support the compliance team with its data protection, freedom of information and wider information governance obligations.

Maintain, collate and update information governance metrics which informs the CISO, SIRO, Exec and Board of the performance of the function and organisation and the risks its holding.

To assist in regulatory interventions ensuring that our regulators are informed, interventions run smoothly and that we ensure transparency with our regulators.

Promote a Data Protection aware culture across all levels of the business using a variety of methods.

Support and review internal processes and policies to ensure high standards in data privacy consistent with NWS values and the expectations of data subjects.

Create information governance guidance and briefings to help NWS colleagues understand their information risks and how to support our information security strategy.

Maintain the information governance team online presence utilising SharePoint and other channels, keeping the workforce up to date on information improvements, risks and informing NWS of our organisational information governance status.

Build and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders generating positive impressions of the team in all interactions.

Takes corrective advice to address routine issues and escalating more complex problems to more senior colleagues to ensure timely and effective resolution.

Nuclear Waste Services builds on the work delivered at the Low-Level Waste Repository (LLWR) site and the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) programme, maintaining these key activities whilst also adding further essential services for customers in the nuclear energy, defence, industrial, medical, and research sectors. Maintaining and developing this knowledge and experience is key to securing and developing our unique nuclear waste capabilities for the UK and the rest of the world
