Lead Policy Analyst Health

Contract type: 14 Months, Fixed Term Contract, Maternity Cover



Location: The roles can be based in the UK or one of the following WaterAid Country Programme -Ghana or South Africa, subject to right-to-work eligibility in the respective countries.

Salary & Benefits: Salaries and benefits for different countries will vary in line with the location of the successful candidate and depending on experience. See further details below:

Role-based in:



  • UK, Grade 2: 53,065 - 55,718 GBP plus benefits

  • Ghana, Grade G: 229,023 - 316,778 GHS plus benefits

  • South Africa, Grade G: 934,839 - 1,274,505 ZAR plus benefits


For the UK location, we offer Hybrid Working - A minimum of 40% of working time is spent face to face, either in the London office or as a result of an external engagement or travel for WaterAid. WaterAid is located at Canary Wharf, London and this will be your location and contract base for candidates based in the United Kingdom.

About the Team:
This position will be based in the Global Policy Team which consist of a highly motivated group of policy analysts, who are passionate about influencing policy change to enable sustainable access to WASH to the world's poorest and most marginalised people through evidence-based advocacy.

About the Role:
We have two roles available, Policy Analyst Health and Lead Policy Analyst Health. These roles will provide health expertise and thought leadership to develop robust policy responses to the challenges presented by lack of prioritisation of WASH for public health. They will provide pro-poor policy solutions - relevant to health towards achieving WaterAid's objective of universal access to WASH by 2030. They will shape the design of WaterAid's WASH and health policy agendas and contribute to the delivery of the organisation's global advocacy priorities relevant to WASH and health.

As our Lead Policy Analyst Health, you will manage and lead the WaterAid's WASH and health policy agenda. You will play a leading role in the delivery of WaterAid's strategic aim of increasing investment and action to prioritise WASH for improved public health through research, policy work and global advocacy priorities and campaigns.

You'll also:



  • Provide strategic leadership and management of the Health and Hygiene Team within the Global Policy and Research Team

  • Represent WaterAid in key external fora to lead advocacy for change

  • Build and manage relationships with key organisations, senior decision makers and stakeholders on WASH and health

  • Lead and shape the development and delivery of a policy research and evidence agenda for WASH and health.

  • Lead the articulation of impactful narratives for WaterAid's WASH and health policy agenda to secure increased health financing for WASH


About You:



  • Extensive experience of working in and leading public policy and/or advocacy on issues related to public health and water, sanitation and hygiene. Deep understanding of global health architecture, discourses and health systems strengthening.

  • Demonstrated evidence of leading and managing teams including senior team members and successful strategy development, implementation and delivery.

  • Exceptional analytical skills and strong experience on leading and building research and evidence agendas.

  • Ability to represent WaterAid in high level external fora. Strong experience in building impactful relationships and policy communities with high-level decision makers and strategic partners.

  • Demonstrated experience of developing policy agendas and narratives for global campaigns on health. Experience of delivering successful policy change on health in developing country contexts and familiarity of diverse, multicultural contexts and across time zones.

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the impact of WASH on public health particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, and the corresponding policy implications to ensure that WASH is prioritised within financing and actions for health systems strengthening.

  • Postgraduate degree in Public Health or other related discipline.
