Please note that this post is funded for the 2026/27 academic year onwards so the successful candidate would not be expected to commence in post prior to August 2026.

Merton College is seeking an inspiring and committed English Lecturer to join our thriving School of Adult Education. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference by helping adult learners develop the English skills they need to progress in education, employment and everyday life.

You’ll deliver high-quality, inclusive teaching across a range of levels and play a key role in motivating learners, supporting their individual goals and creating a positive learning environment where all students can succeed. You’ll also act as a personal tutor, supporting learners’ academic progress and wellbeing, while contributing to the continuous improvement of the curriculum.

As our Lecturer, we would like you to hold a degree or relevant Level 6 qualification in English or related subject, hold a teaching qualification (or willing to work towards) and have experience teaching English to adults in a Further Education or similar setting including Functional Skills and GCSE. You’ll have strong understanding of adult learning principles and inclusive teaching strategies with experience of curriculum development and resource design.

With good planning, preparation, organisational and administrative skills, you’ll be able to work to tight schedules and manage competing priorities effectively. You’ll also possess strong IT and digital literacy skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, together with an awareness of educational technologies and collaborative tools to enhance teaching, learning, and learner engagement.

This role involves some evening teaching.

The successful candidate will be eligible for any increase in salary as a consequence of the annual cost of living review that will be implemented in the new academic year.

Closing date for the return of completed applications is 21st June 2026.

Interviews will be held on 30th June 2026.

The benefits package includes generous annual leave of 40 days plus up to 8 additional days over Christmas/New Year as well as an additional 5 days Wellbeing leave to enhance employees’ physical and mental health. There is an excellent pension scheme that receives a significant financial contribution from the employer (Teachers Pensions or Local Government Pension Scheme), subsidised sports facilities and professional development and training plus a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme. The benefits package will be pro-rated for part time staff.
