Contract type: Permanent, Full Time

Location: The roles can be based in the UK or one of the following WaterAid Country Programme - Ghana or South Africa, subject to right-to-work eligibility in the respective countries.

Salary & Benefits: Salaries and benefits for different countries will vary in line with the location of the successful candidate and depending on experience. See further details below:

Role-based in:



  • UK, Grade 3: 45,579 - 47,858 GBP plus benefits

  • Ghana, Grade F: 148,580 - 233,233 GHS plus benefits

  • South Africa, Grade F : 766,250 - 957,812 ZAR plus benefits


For the UK location, we offer Hybrid Working - A minimum of 40% of working time is spent face to face, either in the London office or as a result of an external engagement or travel for WaterAid. WaterAid is located at Canary Wharf, London and this will be your location and contract base for candidates based in the United Kingdom.

About the Team:
This position will be based in the Global Policy Team which consists of a highly motivated group of policy analysts, who are passionate about influencing policy change to enable sustainable access to WASH to the world's poorest and most marginalised people through evidence-based advocacy.

About the Role:
We have two roles available, Policy Analyst Health and Lead Policy Analyst Health. These roles will provide health expertise and thought leadership to develop robust policy responses to the challenges presented by the lack of prioritisation of WASH for public health. They will provide pro-poor policy solutions - relevant to health towards achieving WaterAid's objective of universal access to WASH by 2030. They will shape the design of WaterAid's WASH and health policy agendas and contribute to the delivery of the organisation's global advocacy priorities relevant to WASH and health.

As our Policy Analyst Health, you will develop innovative policy research and evidence solutions and products to inform WaterAid's advocacy strategies and campaigns relevant to health and act as the lead on thematic health portfolio areas. You will play a key role in the delivery of WaterAid's strategic aim on Prioritising WASH across the health sector.

You'll also:



  • Conduct research and manage research projects to develop context-relevant, evidence-based policy solutions and narratives on WASH and health

  • Translate research and analysis into policy messaging for WaterAid's advocacy, campaigning and communications work around WASH and health to support WaterAid's global advocacy priorities.

  • Support WaterAid's strategic policy relationships including with the World Health Organization and represent WaterAid on WASH and health in external networks, platforms to develop policy solutions and advocate for change.

  • Provide policy and research support to WaterAid Country Programmes to strengthen inclusion of WASH in national health policies, budgets, plans and processes.


About You:



  • Experience in public health policy and policy-making in low income countries and a strong track record of devising and implementing high impact advocacy strategies.

  • A systems thinker with experience in global health discourses and policy influencing including strong quantitative and quality skills, research capacity and managing research projects.

  • Ability to translate research, evidence and policy analysis on WASH and health into clear and impactful policy narratives and advocacy messages for a variety of audiences, including for global advocacy campaigns.

  • Experience of relationship building, cross-sectoral coordination and working within networks and coalitions to drive change

  • Excellent critical thinking and oral and written skills in English. Strong communication skills and ability to use these in relation to a variety of specialist and non-specialist audiences.

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to prioritise and follow through on competing tasks, work independently and to short deadlines. Willingness to travel up to 6 weeks of the year.

  • A team player, able to work responsibly, under pressure, and collaboratively across diverse groups and culture. A working style that reflects WaterAid's values of Respect, Accountability, Courage, Collaboration, Integrity and Innovation.

  • University degree in Public health or other related discipline.


Although not essential, for both roles we also prefer you to have:



  • Knowledge and experience of issues around Health and WASH integration in developing countries - gender and women's health, infectious diseases and maternal and child health.

  • Experience working with specific WASH and health actors: including World Bank, UNICEF, WHO and developing country ministries responsible for sanitation and/or health.

  • Fluent in a WaterAid country programme language, ideally French.
